Most kitchen projects we take on in Ferndale and Bellingham are not really about cabinets. They are about a wall in the wrong place.

Houses built here before the 1990s almost always put the kitchen in its own closed box. Removing that wall — properly, with the right beam and the right support underneath — changes the entire house far more than any countertop will.

Once the layout is right, we handle the rest: cabinetry, counters, backsplash, appliance fit, task lighting, dedicated circuits, proper outside-venting range hoods, and plumbing that is actually where it needs to be rather than where it was in 1978.

Bathrooms

Waterproofing is the whole job.

A bathroom is a small room with a very large capacity to destroy the floor underneath it.

We build bathrooms from the substrate out — proper backer board, a continuous waterproof membrane in wet areas, correctly sloped shower pans, and sealed penetrations. Then tile, fixtures and joinery go on top of something that will not fail.

We also fix the ventilation, which in this climate is not optional. An undersized or unvented fan is why the paint peels and the window frames go black.

Common questions

What does a kitchen remodel cost in Whatcom County?

It depends almost entirely on whether walls and plumbing move. A cabinet-and-counter refresh in the existing layout is a very different project from opening the kitchen into the living room, relocating the sink and upgrading the panel. We price both honestly at the estimate rather than quoting a headline number we would have to walk back.

How long will I be without a kitchen?

For a straightforward remodel in the same footprint, usually three to five weeks. If we are moving walls, plumbing and electrical, six to ten weeks is realistic. We tell you the date the sink comes out and the date it goes back in, and we set up a temporary kitchen area before demolition starts.

Why do bathrooms cost so much for the size?

Because a bathroom is the densest room in the house — plumbing supply and drainage, electrical, ventilation, waterproofing, tile and joinery all inside a few square metres, with water trying to get into every joint. Done cheaply, it shows up as rot in the floor within a few years. Nearly every bathroom we open up has some water damage from the last remodel.
